Health and Wellness Education: To improve sustainable quality of life by providing holistic services such as education, outreach, life skills trainings and a host of health related services aimed at prevention and intervention; as a result, people become empowered to make healthy decisions about their own lives.

 

Literacy Enrichment: To partner with community organizations; provide trained volunteers to assist students, adults and families with reading. Knowledge is Power!

 

Phase I – Partner with the Madeline Oelwein Library

2010 Highlights – A reading program was established for 1st and 3rd graders at the Madeline Oelwein Memorial  Library along with monthly Heritage Presentations.   This was achieved through a partnership with Camp Curtin School and Elizabethtown College

2011 –   Heritage presentations in partnership with Elizabethtown College and Camp Curtin School

Phase II – Summer Reading Program

Sankofa Scholarship:The Sankofa Scholarship was created for the purpose of raising funds to award financial scholarships to deserving students.  The Sankofa Scholarship is funded through donors, sponsors, and future grants.

 

2010 Highlights ~ $1500.00 worth of Heritage books were sponsored for Foose School Library

Contributions to the Sankofa Scholarship will be accepted throughout the year, a portion of the proceeds from the annual MAAFA production will also be donated to the Sankofa Scholarship. Scholarships are awarded to high school graduates and recurring college students on the basis of three criteria: (i) Scholastic Achievement, (ii) Community Involvement and (iii) Financial Need.

 

Part of our mission is to seek sponsors to help us achieve our goals; another part is to seek applicants who meet this criteria. Winners will be announced on the Holistic Hands CDC website and at the Sankofa Scholarship Graduate Breakfast.

 

You ARE eligible to apply for a scholarship if you answer yes to ALL of the following questions:

Are you a resident within the City of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania?

 

Do you have a letter of acceptance into a college, university, or trade school with a beginning dated identified?

 

Do you have a current minimum grade point average of “B” according to the school's standards  (i.e. 3.00 – 3.25 = B)?

 

Have you NOT previously received a Sankofa Scholarship?

 

Only applications that are complete and received by March 30, 2014, will be considered.
